"Soul Surfer" tells the true story of surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack in 2003 at the age of 13. Following the attack, Bethany must learn to reintegrate herself into daily routines with just one arm.
But, most of all, Bethany longed to surf again, despite her injury. She had no fear of being attacked again, and pursued her desire in the midst of a media frenzy and the personal challenge of surfing with one arm.
In the movie, Carrie portrays Sarah Hill, a youth ministry leader who offers advice for Bethany during this tough time. Bethany accompanies Sarah on a mission trip to Phuket, Thailand, where a 2004 tsunami has devastated the residents.
"Soul Surfer" was officially released in April 2011. It won "Best Film for Family Audiences" at the Movie Guide Awards, and was even nominated for a Teen Choice Award.
